Q&A Shipboard Life

Where in the world can I be assigned? Can I request a specific itinerary?

Your assignment is determined by operational needs. However, we have many ships and itineraries, so the chances of seeing many destinations when working for us are high. Our fleet sails to over 800 ports globally, so you can be deployed to any of the major destinations in the Americas, Europe, Australia, Asia, Antarctica, and Africa. Requests for specific itineraries or brands cannot be accommodated.

Who covers the costs of accommodation, food, and travel to a ship?

The company provides transport from the nearest major gateway airport in your country of residence, with flights to join a ship and return home, including overnight accommodation and meals when necessary. Shipboard accommodation, housekeeping, and meals are provided. Internet access and phone calls may require additional payments. In the case of personal emergencies, team members may be eligible for company-funded repatriation benefits under their specific terms and conditions.

What is the average assignment length?

Medical staff are assigned to a ship for about four months, followed by six to eight weeks of vacation.

How can I get in touch with my family and friends at home?

All ships have internet access, and some brands offer crew free WhatsApp. Data and phone calls may require additional payment.

Will I get trained in safety and emergency operations?

Once onboard, you will receive safety training and shipboard orientation. Periodically throughout your assignment, you will receive additional training and drills per maritime law requirements.

Am I allowed to disembark the ship in ports?

Yes, unless you are on duty or required to participate in safety training.

Am I allowed to receive mail/packages while onboard?

Mail may be received when the ship arrives at a home port. It is also possible to send mail using local delivery services from most ports of call. When sending items, please check with your Crew Office regarding customs declaration information before taking any item off the ship.
